Fernando López del Hierro  is another iPhone artist that I’ve been fortunate enough to discover via the gallery in the iCreated app on the iPhone itself – which I always check in on every few days to see what’s new.

His iPhone artwork covers a range of subjects, including some wonderful portraits of famous and non-famous subjects.  My current favorite is the one above, titled ‘Prensa’.

Another lovely piece from our friend (and creator of our site banner) Corliss Blakely.  This one is called Red Poppies and is done with the Inspire-Paint application.

I never thought of myself as a fan of pictures of flowers, but Corliss is converting me I think.

Another place I’ve never been to – but just a stunning picture – the colors in this one grabbed me straight away.

It’s called ‘Santorini View’ and it was done with the Brushes app by Roberta Barbarić, known as Performita on Flickr.

Here’s a little background on this one – entitled just ‘Big’ – from the artist herself, Amy Nelp:

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a BIG, beautiful canyon just five miles from my home.
Down at the bottom of the canyon is the Gunnison river – big enough for small fishing boats. This canyon wall is about 1 1/2 times the height of the Empire State Building – in other words – - – BIG!!

Ha – you can’t say fairer than that – it sure is big, and stunning as well.

Flickr is – as you might expect – one of the best sources for discovering new iPhone art – via many groups dedicated to the subject, and even to various individual iPhone apps.  That’s how I came across David Navas’ work – like ‘Falling Time’ that’s shown above.

It is just like painting in oils. The dry brush is wonderful to achieve the look of an oil . Also I love the new update that saves all the last colors used.

I’ve been admiring Mary Martz’s beautiful iPhone art for quite a little spell now, and I’m so glad she said we could feature it here.  Here’s a little slice of what Mary shared with me in terms of her background and focus for her work:

I think I draw mostly faces because I spent years writing cosmetic copy in New York and have always been fascinated by how much information can be conveyed in just a head shot. I have also always been interested in the connection between outer style and the inner self. When I start drawing, I may know what a character will be wearing, but never her exact mood or personality. I like to think each one has an inner life and story.

I love how much of those inner stories and each creation’s character jumps out at me when I look at Mary’s work.

I recently discovered the iPhone artwork of Matthew Seydel Connors via the Brushes Gallery group on Flickr.   His work seems to cover a very broad range, from portraits and people studies – like Good Chestnuts (shown above) to abstract and fantasy.

When I contacted Matthew he very generously offered up some ‘back story’ information on several of his artworks that I mentioned I’d like to feature here, including details on which iPhone apps were used in the creation process.  Read on to enjoy those …

Once again, Twitter has proved a great discovery tool for me today.  I noticed that our @justiphoneart Twitter account had a new follower this morning, a gentleman called Josh Cassidy.  Turns out Josh does some fantastic art, on the iPhone as well as more traditional mediums.

One of his current projects is creating iPhone ‘fingerpaiting’ portraits of people based on their Twitter profile pictures, using the Brushes app – like the one of Jimmy Fallon above, which is now featured at the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon web site.

One of the things I love about blogging is the genuine sense of community you get when you’ve done it for any decent length of time.  That may sound a little cliched, but I’ve found it to be a truism and today has given me great evidence of how real it is. 

That evidence was by way of a sort of ‘warm welcome’ contact from Benjamin Rabe, who runs the excellent fingerpainted.it site – which is devoted to covering and celebrating iPhone art just as we are here.

I’m continually discovering stunning new iPhone art – sometimes via the many Flickr groups that showcase this form, or even focus on work with particular iPhone apps , and also often via recommendations from friends like David Leibowitz. 

Jose Andres Guijarro Ponce is one of the artists David recently recommended, and another whose work I thoroughly enjoy seeing every day now.  I especially love this piece posted to his Flickr stream, and created with Brushes.   I’ve been to Spain a lot, but don’t know the Cantabria region at all – but I’m guessing this is a fairly famous landmark.

This one caught my eye initially because my daughter is fascinated with animals, and birds in particular.  It’s called Heron, and is part of Tom Paton’s ‘Drawings & Paintings’ set at his Flickr photostream.   Here’s the description of how this one was done:

A sketch of a heron from an old photo. Not traced or manipulated, the photo was on my computer and I drew from the screen.

Done with the colors iPhone app.

Our good friend – and creator of our lovely site banner – Corliss Blakely emailed me this morning to mention a new (ish) iPhone painting application she has been trying out.  The app is called Inspire – Paint, and Corliss used it to produce the lovely ‘5 minute study’ shown above.

Here’s a little bit of what Corliss had to say about the Inspire – Paint app:

It’s a little difficult at first but it is really like painting with oil you can blend with it so well I forget I’m painting on the iPhone.

I always love watching the NBA All Star game each year – above all other similar gatherings of the best of the best in sports.  Apart from the sheer, astounding athleticism of the participants, one of the things I like best about it is that you see lots of examples of great, Hall of Fame level players shaking their heads in awe and genuine admiration of one of their peers.

What the heck does that have to with iPhone art, you might ask.   Well, it’s a little lead-in to the work of iPhone artist Steve John.  Here’s a recent quote from our friend David Scott Leibowitz – creator of the superb iCreated app we featured a couple days ago -  encouraging us to hurry up and discover Steve’s work:

I been making art, looking at art, have lots of artist friends over the past 30 years, and I have never seen anyone so talented. The movies give you an even greater appreciation of his work.
He has made it difficult to post some of my own art to different Flickr groups we both belong to, because every day, he raises the bar higher!

The folks at Ten One Design – makers of the Pogo stylus for iPhone – recently ran a contest, to see what sort of iPhone art could be made with their stylus.  They were amazed at the quality and creativity of the entries they got, and rightly so!

Juan XXIII by Xoan Baltar, painted in Brushes

As you might have noticed from our site banner, this site is all about exploring what artists have been up to on the iPhone. It turns out that Apple’s little smartphone does a lot more than just call, text, and break in and out of jail with every firmware update. With the advent of the App Store, it’s also becoming a fantastic mobile canvas for when inspiration strikes.

We’re not talking just about amazing illustrations from artists like Corliss Blakely, David Scott Leibowitz (whose works are featured on iCreated), or Xoan Baltar (sample shown above) but also all of the other creative content made with the various photography and instrumental apps. Who ever thought you could walk on-stage with a phone and have it turn into an Ocarina? Or how about filming a whole music video — sure it’s not a world’s first — but it still a little breathtaking to think about all that can be done with a glass screen, a bit of Cupertino, and a dash of creativity.

We’ll tend to keep our posts pretty light on the words, and heavier on the presentation of new content — but in this first post we’d also like to say a big thank you to Corliss Blakely for creating our awesome new site banner. We hope to become a regular destination for engaging, high-quality art made on the iPhone, and we think the banner gives us a great head start. We’re also hoping the site will become an effective showcase for talented iPhone artists and their works – perhaps even a good jumping-off point for discovering new ones. We’ve already got a number of posts lined up for publishing, but we’ve also set up a Contact page for artists who would like to submit some of their own pieces.

Thanks for visiting Just iPhone Art  — we’re glad the site is live, but we’re also still working on a few more ways to present all of the amazing content, so stick around!
