HockneyiPadExhibition

David Hockney has an exhibition running in Paris titled ‘Fleurs Fraiches’ (fresh flowers) – featuring floral images he has created on the iPhone and iPad. Better still, the pieces are being displayed not on canvas, but on more than a dozen iPads.

The BBC has a wonderful report up on the new show, and on Hockney’s fascination with the iPhone and iPad as his new digital canvas.  There are lots of fascinating points in the article, but here are just a few that stood out for me:

Hockney on the allure of the iPad for artists …

Who wouldn’t want one? Picasso or Van Gogh would have snapped one up …

– When being interviewed by the BBC, Hockney was sporting a bespoke suit with pockets large enough to fit an iPad.

– iOS devices are now his preferred tools for creating paintings:

The boyish grand old man of pop art with silver hair and lambent eyes is well known for his recent conversion to the iPhone and iPad for his work.

– He clearly sees the iPad as the best place to display these latest works of his, for various reasons. One is that wants visitors to see the pieces ‘just as he created them’ with his fingers.

– True to the show’s name, the images on display are refreshed during the course of the event – with new flowers replacing earlier ones.

— Hockney loves the immediacy of his creations on iDevices …

You can make a drawing of the sunrise at 6am and send it out to people by 7am.

– He uses several applications to create his pieces – but one that is mentioned in the article is the superb Brushes app.

– Of course this quote leaps off the page …

The technology brings a new dimension to the gallery, and both he and the curator Charlie Scheips, believe that they are at the beginning of an artistic revolution for professionals and amateurs alike.

The whole article is a superb read, and there’s also a great video with clips from the Hockney interview and a look at the actual show floor. Give it a look here whenever you have a moment:
