I recently discovered the iPhone artwork of Matthew Seydel Connors via the Brushes Gallery group on Flickr. His work seems to cover a very broad range, from portraits and people studies – like Good Chestnuts (shown above) to abstract and fantasy.
When I contacted Matthew he very generously offered up some ‘back story’ information on several of his artworks that I mentioned I’d like to feature here, including details on which iPhone apps were used in the creation process. Read on to enjoy those …
Here’s Matthew’s short backgrounder on Good Chestnuts:
This painting started on the train while I was visiting my old home of San Francisco in early July. I fingerpaint on the bus every day, so i appreciated this man’s concentration on the task at hand. Made with the Brushes App on my iPhone 3G.
Here is his Microcosm piece, and its description:
Microcosm was really testing a few apps together: first painting a background in Brushes, then laying in a few strokes in the Jackson Pollock app, applying a filter, then digging back in with Brushes. Final color correction via the Mill App.
And here is his Bird Brain artwork along with its brief description:
Bird Brain was also an experiment in ‘App-smashing’ art, starting with a few quick strokes in Fountain Pen, and Jackson Pollock while watching a man on the bus. As i pushed the image further, the bird form developed. I used a whole array of Apps on this one: Brushes, 101 Photo Filters, Fountain Pen, Jackson Pollock, iRetouch, Juxtaposer, and The Mill Colour.
I want to say a huge Thank You to Matthew for providing these great short descriptions to accompany these three wonderful images. I love getting that insight into what inspired the work, and how it was done.

I love Matt's style and especially how he mashes apps as he does in Bird Brain. Great post!
Matt,
This is stunning work. I'm blown away that you did all this on your iphone. Monica and I are in awe of your talent. Amazing.
